How long ranking on Google Maps really takes, using three of my own clients

Three real timelines from my own client work: three weeks for a Scarborough restaurant, eighteen days from page three to position two for an HVAC company, and 47 tracked calls in the first thirty days.

The short version

Three to six weeks if your category is not saturated and the businesses above you are coasting. Two to three months if the map pack already has real review counts and active profiles. The slowest variables are review velocity and whether you answer the phone, and both are yours not mine.

How long ranking on Google Maps really takes

This is the question I get on almost every first call, usually phrased as "realistically, how long before this does anything." Here are three real timelines from my own clients rather than an industry average I read somewhere.

Three weeks, restaurant, Scarborough

Ruby's Mediterranean Cuisine had been open six weeks. No website, unclaimed profile, zero reviews. Top 3 on Maps for their main term inside three weeks.

That is the fastest I have seen, and the reason is worth understanding: their competitors were coasting. Three established restaurants that had been there for years, none of them posting, none of them collecting reviews, a couple with the wrong primary category. When the incumbents are asleep, a correctly configured profile plus a real site is enough to walk past them.

Eighteen days, HVAC, from page three to position two

An HVAC client sat on page three for "emergency HVAC Toronto". Eighteen days after we rebuilt the profile and the on-page, they were at position two.

Page three to page one sounds dramatic but it is usually the easiest move in local. Page three means Google already understands what you are and has decided you are not the best answer yet. You are arguing about ranking, not about existing. Getting indexed and understood in the first place takes longer than moving up once you are.

Thirty days, same client, 47 tracked calls

The number that mattered to that HVAC owner was not the position, it was 47 tracked calls in the first 30 days after the rebuild. Position two is a means to that.

I mention this because clients often ask about ranking when what they mean is calls, and those two things do not move on the same schedule. You can gain three positions in a week and see no call volume change if the search intent above you is different. You can also stay at position four and see calls climb because your photos and reviews got better and more people chose you out of the pack.

So what should you actually expect

Three to six weeks to see movement if your category is not saturated and nobody above you is actively working. That is the honest band for most Toronto trades and restaurants.

Two to three months if the map pack above you has real review counts and active profiles. The work is the same, it just takes longer to overtake people who are also trying.

Longer than that, or not worth doing at all, if you are entering a category where everyone above you has hundreds of reviews and years of history. I would rather tell you that before you pay me.

The things that make it slower

Not answering the phone. Pickup rate feeds back into your position, and it is the one variable entirely in your control.

No reviews and no willingness to ask for them. Review velocity is the strongest lever in the pack and I cannot pull it for you. The clients who move fastest are the ones whose techs text the customer afterwards from the number the customer already knows.

A site Google struggles to read. If the first month has to be spent making your site indexable, that is a month not spent ranking it.

Changing your business name, address or hours mid-campaign. Every change resets a little trust.

What I would ask before believing any timeline

If someone promises page one in 30 days without having looked at your map pack, they have not looked at your map pack. The answer depends almost entirely on who is already there and how hard they are working.

If you want the specific answer for your city and service rather than a range, send me the details and I will look at what is currently ranking. That check is free and takes about a day. You can also read how the local SEO work itself is structured week by week.
